About Us

In 2026, Rotorua Little Theatre will celebrate its 75th anniversary. For nearly 75 years, we have entertained the Rotorua public—originally performing at the Concert Chamber in the old Civic Theatre before moving to our current location at Shambles Theatre, behind Pak’n’Save on Amohau Street, in 1955.

We are a community-driven theatre, operated entirely by volunteers passionate about the performing arts. Our mission is to keep live theatre accessible at a reasonable cost for the Rotorua community, while also offering a platform for out-of-town performers to bring their shows to a local audience at a sustainable cost.

The theatre is managed by a committee of ten volunteers, elected annually, who aim to produce four shows each year. Our performances range from Shakespeare and murder mysteries to pantomime and farce, ensuring a diverse lineup for all audiences.

Our Facilities

Over the years, our facilities have grown and now include:

  • A welcoming entrance and foyer with accessible ladies’ and gents’ toilets.
  • A ‘Greenroom’ for our audience, cast, and crew, featuring a bar and kitchen facilities.
  • A small meeting and storage room, along with additional rooms for housing props.
  • A lighting and sound box.
  • An attic for extra prop storage.
  • A raked auditorium seating 103 patrons (including 2 wheelchair spaces), facing a proscenium arch stage with ample working space backstage and in the wings.
  • A well-equipped workroom for larger scenery and staging.
  • ‘The Nut Room’ – A workshop room.
  • An extensive wardrobe collection.
